“In Case You Missed It XXX” is not a parody, it’s a new column by me, Courtney Trouble! It’s a mix of NSFW news you can use, as well as resources for “grown ups”—let’s get to it!
The SFPFF (San Francisco PornFilmFestival) will be held this year from August 19th through the 23rd, with five days of virtual programing that will mirror the IRL options they and other porn film festivals typically provide: a filmmaker meet and greet, opening and closing films, a program of shorts, and a 24-hour finale where all of the live-streamed events will be replayed.
The festival starts with a pre-show called “Fore/Play,” where a wide range of clips and cuts will be on view for 24 hours. Selections include indie studios like BEYONDEEP and AORTA Films; visual artists like Loree Erickson and Nomy Lamm, and collective work from folks like Sex School Hub.
Festival pass holders can meet the filmmakers online on Thursday, August 20th, before the opening film: Theo Meow and Candy Flip’s award winning feature, The Sad Girls of the Mountains.
Special guest, fellow festival curator and London Porn Film Festival director, designed a shorts program for SFPFF spanning 30 years of “brazen” works, featuring Four Chambers’ new film Orgone Theory, and a Del LaGrace Volcano docu-porn about trans men cruising in the 90’s, “Pansexual Public Porn.” “Brazen/Brits: Short Adult Films from the United Kingdom” screens on Aug. 21st, before Érica Sarmet’s selections curated from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and México: “POST/PORNO.” Sarmet’s selections include Terrorismo Teatral Migrante’s “Fuck the Facism Capítulo 4.”
Other programs include shorts dedicated to BDSM and kink, experimental films, and narrative shorts. The festival ends with the closing film “Volunteers Wanted,” which was shot at the Berlin Porn Film Festival. The film is described by the SFPFF website’s Closing Event details as a “mixing of documentary and drama where all performers play themselves,” serving us a healthy dish of either FOMO or nostalgia, depending on whether you’ve been to an IRL porn film festival or not.
When venues reopen, attending a porn film festival should move to the top of your bucket list. Until then, these virtual porn film festivals provide a unique opportunity to experience a film festival from your bedroom, where your comfort levels around porn will be vastly different than in a theater. But not to worry, you’ll still be able to get all blushy and nervous when you meet the filmmakers and stars in the chat rooms.
My only question is: who is hosting the unofficial Zoom dance party?
